Week from hell, and it’s only Wednesday
Phone call from my mother Sunday morning, words I’ve heard hundreds of times
Mom: “Your sister is back in the hospital”
Me: “Ok, what’s wrong now”
Mom: “She’s in a coma, has bleeding on the brain, and is on a ventilator, that’s all we know. Dad and I are heading there now.”
Me: “The first question you ask that doctor better be her sister is two hours a way, does she need to be there.”
Mom: “Of course. I know. I’ll call you and let you know.”
Two hours goes by, I’m pacing around the house not sure what to do, what to think, if I should just leave. I end up driving two hours to the hospital. I walk into the room, and my sister doesn’t look like my sister. They have six tubes in her mouth, two in her nose, and she’s swollen because her kidneys aren’t working and the toxins are being stored in her body. I wanted to break down right then and there, but stayed strong for my mother.
My sister and I haven’t had the best relationship for the past 11 years. We were together all the time before then. She had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with my nephew and it stayed after he was born. She stopped taking care of herself and her body has been on the decline since, as well as her mental state. She’s been in the hospital a hundred times before this as well as mental hospitals, and that’s why I never thought anything of it when I heard she was back in, but obviously this time it’s different and I’m at a loss.
It’s now Wednesday evening, and she has only shown slight progress. They’ve started dialysis through a central port in her neck. She’s now breathing with the ventilator, and can wiggle her toes, but her blood pressure is still extremely high which caused the bleeding on her brain, she’s still swollen, and the bleeding on the brain hasn’t changed.
I don’t know what to do, I’m freaking out. My nephew has been going through her being in the hospital roughly twice a month since he was born, he’s now eleven. His dad (divorced my sister when her mental state changed and when she wouldn’t take care of herself) told him that his mother was back in the hospital again, and his response was “Just let me know when she dies Dad.” This is the worst thing that could come out of an eleven year olds mouth in my opinion.
I’m lost, confused, worried, frustrated, angry, and most of all scared.
